SMART Goals Evaluation
Think back to the five SMART goals you created earlier in the term. Write a reflection paper following APA format and consisting of 750-1000 words in length. Then, create a 5–7-minute reflection video using the word document which evaluates each SMART goal that you created. Use Teams, Zoom, or Canvas Studio's Screen Capture feature to record your presentation. Your face must be visible on camera (in the corner as you present your paper). You must introduce yourself and show your identification. You must dress professionally, or your presentation will not be graded.
Use the following questions to guide your response:
1. What were you expecting from the experience before you started?
2. Why were you expecting this?
3. Why did you choose this goal?
4. Did you learn anything about a different group in society (i.e., different age, profession, ethnic, racial or socio-economic group)? What did you learn?
5. What is the most valuable experience you acquired?
6. What impact did the experience have on your everyday life?
7. What did you learn that was directly related to your course objectives?

SMART Goals: Psychiatric Management II, Clinical Experience
Hayden Potter St. Thomas University NUR 620 Dr. Brown March 23, 2025
See next slide for intro information
1
SMART PLAN
Will develop 6 SMART goals for my clinical experience in psychiatric nursing management II.
For each goal, I will clearly state SMART characteristics that will help guide measurable progress and ensure the development of critical competencies throughout the course.
This presentation outlines six SMART goals for my clinical experience in psychiatric nursing. Each goal is strategically designed to enhance my competencies in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, communication, collaboration, and documentation. By structuring my objectives using the SMART criteria—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely—I can ensure that these goals are both practical and focused on my professional development. Achieving these goals will directly contribute to my effectiveness in clinical practice as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. The goals are intended to let me keep track of my progress and to modify my approach as per my preceptor’s feedback, thereby making the clinical term a progressive experience.
2
What is a SMART Goal?
Specific
A clearly defined, detailed goal
Measurable
Must be quantifiable
Achievable
Realistic and attainable
Relevant
Aligns with current course, or professional development and clinical practice
Medical, mental health, furthers medical knowledge
Timely
Detailed, clearly defined timeline
Timeframe to achieve completion of goal, when?
SMART goals are intended to help create a framework for setting clear, actionable goals (Ogbeiwi, 2021). Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely are the characteristics of each goal that the acronym stands for. The specific goal is clear, and a target is clearly in view. It is measurable, in that progress can be measured by quantitative outcomes like. Realistic and achievable goals are goals that can be achieved with the available resources and time. Goals that are relevant to professional growth are also directly relevant to clinical practice. Lastly, timely goals have a set timeframe; thus, there is urgency and completion. Ogbeiwi (2021) states that the SMART criteria are essential to ensuring focused and result-oriented, professional development.
3
Goal No. 1, Assessment
IMPROVE PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT SKILLS
Specific: Conduct psychiatric assessments on children with internalizing disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression).
Measurable: Complete at least three psychiatric assessments and receive feedback from my preceptor.
Achievable: Seek guidance from my preceptor, use tools like the Child Behavior Checklist.
Relevant: Psychiatric assessments are essential for diagnosing and planning care for pediatric patients.
Timely: Complete by the end of Module 4 (4 weeks). APRIL 13, 2025.
I want to enhance my skills in doing psychiatric assessments, mainly for children with internalizing disorders like anxiety and depression. The process of assessment will include at least three psychiatric assessments with feedback from my preceptor to help me refine my techniques. It is possible to reach this goal since I will ask for help from my preceptor and utilize validated tools such as the Child Behavior Checklist during assessment. These are skills that are directly relevant to my role as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, the foundation for which these skills are important for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. It is time bound, and I expect to complete it by the end of Module 4 (4 weeks) and track my progress and make changes.
4
NO. 2, Diagnose
ENHANCE DIAGNOSTIC SKILLS USING DSM-5
Specific: Use DSM-5 to diagnose mood disorders, Autism and other intellectual disabilities in children and adolescents.
Measurable: Diagnose at least five patients and compare my diagnoses with preceptor feedback.
Achievable: Review DSM-5 criteria and apply them during patient assessments. Use clinical and national standard guidelines to form treatment plan.
Relevant: Accurate diagnosis is critical for appropriate treatment and care.
Timely: Complete by the end of Module 5 (5 weeks). APRIL 20, 2025.
I hope to improve my ability to make diagnoses with the DSM-5. Specifically with mood disorders, Autism, and other intellectual disabilities. Through diagnosing at least five patients using DSM-5 criteria, I can compare my diagnostic findings with my preceptor’s feedback and ensure the accuracy of my diagnosis and practice my skills. I can also form additional differential diagnoses for each diagnosis which can help me formulate a treatment plan. It can be achieved through regular study of the DSM-5 criteria and utilization of them during patient assessment and following all course work recommendations and readings. Psychiatric advanced nursing practice relies on accurate diagnosis as it informs the treatment plan and intervention (Stein et al., 2022). The goal is relevant to my clinical role, and the project will be completed by the end of Module 5 (5 weeks).
5
No. 3, Medication Knowledge
IMPROVE PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY KNOWLEDGE
Specific: Enhance understanding of psychopharmacology, particularly for treating mood disorders and schizophrenia for pediatric populations.
Measurable: Review 10 psychopharmacology resources and discuss medication plans for at least five patients.
Achievable: Dedicate 2 hours per week to studying relevant literature and case studies.
Relevant: Psychopharmacology knowledge is crucial for effective treatment planning.
Timely: Complete by the end of Module 6 (6 weeks). APRIL 27, 2025.
To improve my understanding of psychopharmacology, I will review 10 resources on medications used to treat mood disorders, schizophrenia and attention disorders- stimulant versus non-stimulant. The goal is measurable, as I will discuss the pharmacological treatment plans for at least five patients, focusing on the medications prescribed and their therapeutic effects. (Could form a Psychiatric Evaluation to further explore medication interpretation. This goal is achievable because I can allocate two hours per week to review resources and case studies related to psychopharmacology, using clinical textbooks and pharmacology resources, like Epocrates. Given the relevance of pharmacology in psychiatric nursing, the goal is directly tied to my development as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. The timeline for completion is the end of Module 6 (6 weeks), ensuring that I have sufficient time to review the necessary materials and integrate them into my practice.
6
No. 4, Communication
DEVELOP THERAPEUTIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Specific: Improve therapeutic communication with children and adolescents diagnosed with psychiatric disorders.
Measurable: Engage in at least 10 therapeutic communication sessions with patients being mindful of developmental age, documenting progress.
Achievable: Practice active listening, empathy, and techniques like motivational interviewing.
Relevant: Effective communication is vital for building rapport and providing quality care. Know intellectual capability of the patient.
Timely: Complete by the end of Module 7 (6 weeks). May 1, 2025.
