Continuing Case: Online Tutors, Inc.
Online Tutors, Inc. provides Online tutoring. They are doing well with
scheduled tutoring sessions, but would like to offer on demand tutoring in
addition.
Online Tutors’ president, Mary Montgomery, sent a letter to IT consultant,
Julie Martin, to help develop the system for the new services. During the
project, Julie will work closely with Ryan Lewis, who manages Online
operations. You, as an intern will assist Julie. You are eager for the chance to
make a good impression in your first professional job.
Background
You are enjoying your job as a student intern at Online Tutors. Last week,
Julie asked you to help her plan the new information system project.
Julie knows that you have completed several information systems courses at
the local college, and that you have studied project management tools and
techniques.
Specifically, she wants you to get ready for the next set of systems
development tasks, which will be requirements modeling for the new
system.
Yesterday, Julie asked you to meet with her to discuss the specific tasks she
wants your team to perform.
After meeting with Julie, you review your notes.
She wants you to treat the set of tasks as a project, and to use project
management skills to plan the tasks.
Here is what she suggested to you as a work breakdown structure, including
the duration she estimated for each task:
First, your team needs to meet with each of the managers at Online
Tutors (5 days).
After these meetings, you can conduct a series of interviews (5 days).
When the interviews are complete, two tasks can begin at the same
time: your team can review company records (3 days) and observe
business operations (8 days).
When your team has reviewed the records and observed business
operations, they can analyze the MyBookkeeper accounting software
(5 days) and study a sample of sales and billing transactions (2 days).
After completing the analysis and studying the sales transactions,
prepare a report for Julie (1 day)
You are excited about the opportunity to practice your skills, and you start to
work on the following list.
Tasks
Create a professional looking document to address the issues noted below.
Be sure that you have corrected all spelling and grammar errors and clearly
label all sections of the report.
1. Create a table listing all tasks separately, with their duration.
2. Identify all dependent tasks, and indicate what predecessor tasks are
required.
3. Construct a PERT/CPM chart similar to the one in the text. 7 points.
4. Determine the overall duration of the project; Make sure you clearly
indicated the critical path.
Remember that different persons will perform each task if they can perform
the tasks simultaneously.
