I. Background-Ear candling (also known as thermal-auricular therapy) is an alternative practice that involves inserting a hollow candle into the ear canal and lighting the exposed end. Proponents claim that the heat creates a vacuum that draws out earwax and toxins. Despite its popularity in some holistic health circles, there is no scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of this method. It has been discredited by medical professionals and organizations such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Academy of Otolaryngology
II. Uses-Ear candling is often promoted as a remedy for removing earwax, relieving sinus pressure, treating ear infections, and improving hearing, balance, and general well-being.
III. Symptoms- Users may seek ear candling due to symptoms such as earwax buildup, earaches, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or sinus congestion.
IV. Treatments- In evidence-based medicine, earwax buildup is best treated with ear drops or by a medical professional using irrigation or suction techniques. Ear candling is not a scientifically supported treatment.
V. Complications- Ear candling can lead to serious complications including burns, ear canal blockages, punctured eardrums, and candle wax deposits in the ear. These complications can worsen the very symptoms users seek to treat.
VI. Prevention- Safe ear care includes gentle cleaning of the outer ear with a damp cloth and allowing the ear's natural cleaning process to function. Avoiding inserting objects or using ear candles can prevent damage or infection.
VII. Used to treat- Ear candling is associated with the auditory system, particularly the external and middle ear.
