Assignment: Critique of a Data Visualization or Infographic
In this assignment, you will find a data visualization or infographic related to a science or environmental topic and evaluate how effectively it communicates its message. The infographic can be especially effective or ineffective—your goal is to analyze it based on the 10 criteria we discussed in class.
Instructions:
- Post an image or link to the infographic or data visualization you are analyzing. It should relate to a science, health, or environmental topic (e.g., climate change, energy use, recycling, biodiversity, pollution, disease prevention, etc.).
- Briefly describe what the infographic is about and what it's trying to achieve. Is it designed to persuade, raise awareness, inform, or encourage action? (1–3 sentences)
- Give your personal evaluation of whether it works well or not. Be specific about your reaction. (1–3 sentences)
- Critique the infographic using the 10 criteria discussed in class. Use bullet points, and clearly address each of the following:
- Targeted to a specific audience
- Simplicity
- Focused on one theme
- Shows things visually (rather than relying on text)
- Manageable length (not overwhelming)
- Includes white space for readability
- Effective headline
- Logical flow of information
- Data is accurate and makes sense
- Sources are cited
Requirements:
- Total response should be around 200 words
- Use clear grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Examples:
- A CDC infographic on how vaccines work
- A climate change graphic from the IPCC or NASA
- An Instagram infographic advocating for sustainable fashion
- A confusing chart about carbon emissions from an industry report
