Local Resource Directory
Parents need resources, particularly in their local community. Many parents are unaware of the numerous resources available and have no idea how to find them and where they are located. As a new professional, you will need to provide resources to parents. For this assignment, students will create a resource document for parents that provide parenting services across the life-span in the following areas. A reminder that these programs must be geared toward parents. You must pick one topic from each column, for a total of THREE community resources:
Community Resource Topics
Contemporary Families
- Parenting approaches
- Divorce
- Diverse families (i.e., LGBTQ+, single-parent, military, immigrant, etc…)
- Infants
- Toddlers
- Preschoolers
- School-age
- Adolescents
- Aging Parents & Adult Children
- But wait! I'm confused! What kind of programs are we supposed to research? Here are some examples of programs that assist parents in each of the three categories from your instructor's hometown area: Spokane, WA.

- https://spokanetribalnetwork.org/sfl/Parenting Children & Youth:

- If I was a 60-year-old, how would a program assist me in caring for my 90-year-old mother? What supports would be available with regard to our parent-child relationship? Consider opportunities for family caregiver support and resources, for example.
- Note: some of these links above might not offer too much information, which means I would need to email those agencies directly to learn more about a specific program they offer.

Still confused? Please review this example (i upload the example) Download examplefor one category of the assignment from a former student in the class. This example includes a thorough introduction, project name, a review of a program geared toward parenting children and youth, and a reference list. This is not the entire assignment, but rather an example to get you started.
The resource MUST contain the following:
- Introduction with region you are exploring (the closer to home, the better!)
- Name of program
- Contact information for program, including website
- A minimum of one paragraph (7 sentences minimum) narrative explaining the available services.
- A minimum of one paragraph (7 sentences minimum) narrative on how the program’s services relate to APA-cited course concepts. This is the time to make explicit connections between your programs and course content.
- APA-formatted citations and a reference list.
Be creative! You can design a brochure, a PowerPoint, a video, a podcast, etc… Give your resource a name (i.e., Deschutes County Family Resource Directory), some photos and visuals, along with the required information. Review the rubric for details.

SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM
The Priority Center offers several different programs that teach parents how to create a safe home environment for children. School Readiness is one of those programs that is for parents
with children 0-8 years old. The program is 3 months long. This program assists parents in identifying developmental or learning
delays as soon as possible, and then working with them to provide resources.
Specialists in the program will do an assessment of the child and link parents to supportive services such as counseling or Medi-Cal
enrollment. In addition, they provide community trainings for parents or professionals working with children in English,
Spanish, and Vietnamese.
CONNECTION TO COURSE CONTENT
This resource can be used for parents of children in the infant, toddler, preschool, and grade school age. The main purpose of the program is to help parents identify any developmental or learning delays their child may have through specialists and then be able to receive resources
from one place. Parents at this time should be paying attention to their child’s development as throughout all of these stages they will change and develop many new skills and milestones.
For example, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (2021), a toddler’s growth and development should include physical skills such as walking alone, kicking a ball, etc…. With
regard to social skills, they should be imitating the behavior of others and be enthusiastic about the company of other children. Cognitively, they should be playing pretend, and sorting shapes
and colors.
If parents are not seeing this kind of development, reaching out to this program might be helpful to understand their child better. They can get resources and professional feedback on
how to better be there for their child. When families know the best way to parent their children it will serve to strengthen the parent-child relationship. This program also ensures the child is
ready for school and ready to learn; leading to a positive educational experience!
